An update from the
United Way 911 Fund received 6/30/02:
Dear September 11th
Fund Donor,
Thank you for your
support of The September 11th Fund, co-founded by United Way of New
York City and The New York Community Trust. You are receiving this message
because you signed up for e-updates when you contributed to the Fund.
Since the last update we sent you, The Fund has made 40 grants totaling
$46 million to meet the needs of victims, families and communities affected
by the terrorist attacks. Thus far, the Fund has made 223 grants and
disbursed $284 million.
Where Your Donation
is Going. . .
Nearly 45,000 individuals
in 41 states have received cash relief and other services, including:
3,800 surviving families and people who were severely injured, 35,000
who lost their jobs and 6,000 who were displaced from their homes. Within
11 days of the attack, the Fund began making grants and continues to
do so, averaging $30 million in grants each month. As of May 31, 2002,
223 grants totaling $284 million were made: Ninety-one percent ($259
million) went to cash assistance and services for victims; 7 percent
($19 million) for loans and grants to directly affected communities;
and 2 percent ($6 million) to rescue and recovery efforts.
Just a few of the
people your donation is helping . . .
A Mother & Her Newborn Child Days after losing her husband in the
World Trade Center collapse, a New Jersey woman gave birth to her third
child. Through your donation, the Fund provided her with cash assistance
and services, including home visits by a grief counselor and a live-in
health aide to help her recover from the difficult birth.
A Businessman Who Lost Everything For those of you who may not be familiar
with Lower Manhattan, this was a neighborhood that 3,400 small businesses,
2,000 nonprofits, and 20,000 people called home. For one gentleman,
it was where he chose to live and work. On September 11, he lost his
small business, home and car to the attacks. With a loan from the Fund,
he was able to re-open his business, re-hire nine employees; and months
later, hire two more people.
Providing the Highest
Level of Accountability
As co-founder of The September 11th Fund - along with The New York Community
Trust - we are committed to the highest standard of accountability to
our more than two million donors and the public. From day one, we have
reported regularly on the Fund's purposes, and how it helps meet both
immediate and longer-term needs of the victims, families, and affected
communities.Through regular press releases, a special report on its
first six months and the website, www.September11Fund.org, the Fund
has provided a complete accounting of the donations, including a list
of all grants and their purpose.
Continuing to Meet
the Needs of Victims and Families
Some of you have
asked what the Fund plans to do with the approximately $200 million
remaining. The answer is simple: keep meeting the needs of the victims,
families and affected communities. While we are pleased to report that
the fund has been able to help more than 45,000, we recognize that the
healing process is far from complete. The Fund is continuing to make
grants for cash assistance, mental health counseling, job training and
placement and, legal and financial advice to individuals and families.
It also makes grants to ensure that people know where and how to get
help, funding a toll-free information hotline, on-line service guides,
and the training and support of personal 'service coordinators.' The
Fund also continues to help the community rebuild, by funding grants
and loans to affected small business and nonprofits.
We think it's important that the Fund be able to continue to meet these
needs. We learned from Oklahoma City that some wounds will take years
to heal; in many cases, those affected will not even ask for help for
a year or more. By working with government and other charities, using
its funds to help those who are not being helped by others, the Fund
can help ensure that these individuals and their families continue to
receive the counseling and other support services they need.
We encourage you to log on to www.September11Fund.org to view the latest
information on the Fund. As always, thank you for your support of The
September 11th Fund.
Sincerely,
Ralph Dickerson, Jr.
